Tradition vs. innovation: comparing bioacoustics and mist-net results to bat sampling

چکیده
Bats are a complex and diverse group, making their study remarkably challenging. Several methods allow the of bats, e.g. mist-nets acoustic monitoring (AM). We compare use AM to inventory bats in mountainous region São Paulo state, Brazil. provide species list for area based on registered with both methodologies, comparing known obtained from literature. calculated beta diversity between methodologies evaluate dissimilarity composition sampled these methods. also performed PCA if bat fauna showed species-habitat associations. recorded 15 species/sonotypes through 22 mist-nets. Beta revealed 97% composition. The turnover component explained 96% this dissimilarity. that Vespertilionidae were associated border/cluttered habitats, while Molossidae present all habitat types. state comprises eighty species. Our more than 25% fauna. Mist-nets efficient sampling low-flying/low-intensity echolocating bats. is crucial high-flying/high-intensity This second state.

Enhancing sampling design in mist-net bat surveys by accounting for sample size optimization
The advantages of mist-netting, the main technique used in Neotropical bat community studies to date, include logistical implementation, standardization and sampling representativeness. Nonetheless, study designs still have to deal with issues of detectability related to how different species behave and use the environment. Yet there is considerable sampling heterogeneity across available studi...
متن کاملTechniques and Technology Mist Net Effort Required to Inventory a Forest Bat Species Assemblage
Little quantitative information exists about the survey effort necessary to inventory temperate bat species assemblages. We used a bootstrap resampling algorithm to estimate the number of mist net surveys required to capture individuals from 9 species at both study area and site levels using data collected in a forested watershed in northwestern California, USA, during 1996–2000. The mean numbe...
متن کاملOptimizing Sampling Design to Deal with Mist-Net Avoidance in Amazonian Birds and Bats
Mist netting is a widely used technique to sample bird and bat assemblages. However, captures often decline with time because animals learn and avoid the locations of nets. This avoidance or net shyness can substantially decrease sampling efficiency. We quantified the day-to-day decline in captures of Amazonian birds and bats with mist nets set at the same location for four consecutive days. We...

Digital technology brings great impact to art creation as well as a gap between traditional art and modern society. Finding the link between traditional and the modern has been a focusing issue in some countries such as China. In order to make a contribution to this process, this study focuses on the potential of digital media in the context of traditional visual art, in particular on Chinese l...
